Kultaranta Talks: power and strength or a shared order?

The first of this year’s Kultaranta Talks, hosted by the President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö, focused on the growing role of power and strength in international politics, and the weakening of the rules based world order. At the heart of the debate was the issue of how both citizens and political leaders around the world can be persuaded of the benefits of the rules based system.

Sääntöpohjainen kansainvälinen järjestys on ollut kansainvälisessä politiikassa tapahtuneen muutoksen uhri,  tasavallan presidentti Sauli Niinistö sanoi avatessaan Kultaranta-keskustelut sunnuntaina 17. kesäkuuta 2018. ”Vaikutamme olevan luisumassa maailmaan, jossa yksittäiset johtajat voimallaan jyräävät pysyvien instituutioiden yli, jossa yhden valta puhuu äänekkäämmin kuin monenkeskiset sopimukset ja yhteiset normit ja arvot."

Let me begin by thanking President Niinistö for inviting me to speak here today. It is always a pleasure to be here in Kultaranta. This venue brings back so many good memories to me and my wife Eeva. We have spent the last couple of days here in Naantali enjoying classical music at the Naantali music festival. This is one of the absolute benefits of being semi-retired.

We have gathered here every June since 2013 to discuss current issues in foreign and security policy. Looking back, it turns out that five years is a very long time in international affairs. The change in the global picture has been quite dramatic. And unfortunately it has mainly not been for the better.

The Kultaranta talks on 17-18 June 2018 will concentrate on the future of the international system, international organisations and sustainable development. Hosted by President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö at Kultaranta in Naantali, the event focusing on foreign and security policy is now being held for the sixth time.
